Screen Record With Sound on a Mac
Your Mac's own recorder leaves out the sound your Mac plays. Chrome 141 or later on macOS 14.2 or later can record it, with no sound driver to install: press Record, pick a window or your screen, and turn on Also share system audio.
Set up for a Mac: a window with its sound and your microphone.
Why the recording is silent
QuickTime and the Screenshot toolbar (Shift, Command, 5) record the screen and, if you pick it, your microphone. They do not record the sound coming out of your Mac: a video, a call, a game. The usual fix has been a virtual sound driver or a paid app.
Record your Mac's sound in Chrome
- Check your versionsChrome 141 or later (Chrome menu, About Google Chrome) and macOS 14.2 or later (Apple menu, About This Mac).
- Share a window or the screenOpen the recorder, turn on Computer sound, press Record, and pick a window or your whole screen.
- Turn on system audioIn Chrome's share window, switch on Also share system audio, then Share. Your Mac may ask once to allow Chrome to record.
On an older Chrome or macOS
Share a tab instead: pick A tab in the recorder and keep Also share tab audio on. You get that tab's sound, such as a video playing in it, but not sound from other apps.
Safari and Firefox
They record your microphone but not your Mac's sound. Open the recorder in Chrome for that.
Questions
Does QuickTime record screen with audio?
QuickTime records your microphone with the screen, but not the sound your Mac plays: a video, a call or an app. For that, use Chrome 141 or later on macOS 14.2 or later, or a sound driver.
How do I record internal audio on a Mac without software?
In Chrome 141 or later on macOS 14.2 or later, share a window or the screen and turn on Also share system audio. Nothing else is installed.
Why doesn't Chrome show Also share system audio on my Mac?
Your Chrome or macOS is older than 141 or 14.2. Update both, or share a tab with Also share tab audio on to get that tab's sound.
Will my Mac ask for permission?
Yes, the first time: macOS asks you to allow Chrome to record the screen in System Settings, Privacy and Security. Chrome may need to restart after you allow it.
